Robotics for rehabilitation

Teacher: Antonio Gimenez Fernandez

Program: The manipulator robots and mobile robots studied in the previous topics have been adapted and are being used intensively in the medical field, mainly because in the performance of their tasks they manage to improve the quality of life of patients. In the field of rehabilitation, the classic manual treatment is insufficient for the patient, both from the spatial point of view and temporally and economically. Not to mention the loss of motivation of the patient and the limitation of the complexity of the therapies to the knowledge of the therapist, and to the traditional instruments. This topic shows the advantages of robotic rehabilitation, introducing the basic concepts related to the different elements that make up a system of these characteristics and their adaptation to the particularities of patients and treatments. The classic and most innovative robotic devices are introduced, and their application to the rehabilitation of upper limbs (shoulder, hand, wrist) and lower limbs (mainly ankle) is shown.
